KODAI COMICS – PUBLISHER INTRO

Kodai Comics (古代 – “ancient”) is Ireland’s first dedicated manga publisher, born from the recognition that manga’s cinematic visual storytelling can achieve what was nearly lost: the reconstruction of Irish visual culture.

For centuries, Ireland’s visual heritage—illuminated manuscripts, carved stones, painted churches—was systematically destroyed, leaving Gaelic Ireland accessible only through archaeological fragments. Unlike Western comics that illustrate texts, manga immerses readers in visual narrative, making it the perfect medium to resurrect and reimagine Ireland’s buried stories.

Based in Sligo, birthplace of comics pioneer Jack Yeats, Kodai Comics continues his interrupted legacy, using sequential art to explore Irish history, mythology, and the ongoing battle between cultural creation and cultural erasure. Through historically grounded seinen manga, we’re building what colonialism tried to destroy: an Irish visual language for the long form story.
